Margaret Breeden

Margaret 'Maggie' Breeden, 75, of DeSoto, passed away at 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 14, 2003 at home surrounded by her family and friends.

            Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 18, 2003 at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale with Doris McKee officiating.  Interment was held at Hallidayboro Cemetery, Hallidayboro, IL.  Friends called after 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 17, 2003 at the funeral home.

            Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, 1110 N. Johnson, Marion, IL  62959 or Library Fund, DeSoto Grade School, 311 Hurst Road, DeSoto, IL 62924.

            Margaret was born November 7, 1927 in Hallidayboro to Cecil Stanley and Lucille (Stearns) Griffin.  She married Bill Breeden on December 31, 1947 at Osceola, Ark.  He survives.

            Survivors include her husband, Bill Breeden of DeSoto; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jackie and Steve Knowle of Dallas, Ga., Dana and Frank Smith of DeSoto, and Lisa Jacquot of DeSoto; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; one sister, Mona Walters of Hallidayboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

            She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jackie Dale Griffin; and one sister, Norma Tripp.

            Mrs. Breeden had been a trustee for the Village of DeSoto; she was a charter member of the DeSoto Civic Club; and a member of the DeSoto Park Board.  Early in the 1990s she retired from the Jackson County Jail where she had worked as a cook.  Margaret and Bill were the owners and operators of the DeSoto Laundromat.  

            She was an avid reader and loved to play Scrabble.  She and her friend of fifty-five, Doris Snider spent countless hours together over their favorite past-time of playing the game.
